U.S. markets stagger to starting point

NEW YORK, June 23 (UPI) -- U.S. markets traded lower in New York Monday, but the Dow Jones industrial average rallied to near its starting point by day's end.

By close Monday, the DJIA was down 0.33 points to 11,842.36, off less than 0.01 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 0.07 or 0.01 percent to 1,318.00. The Nasdaq composite index fell 20.35 or 0.85 percent to 2,385.74.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,048 stocks advanced and 2,108 stocks declined on a volume of 1.086 billion shares traded.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell 3/32 to yield 4.18 percent.

The dollar was higher. The euro traded at $1.5514 from Friday's $1.5523, while the dollar traded at 107.84 yen from Friday's 107.82 yen.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei index lost 84.61 points to 13,857.47, off 0.61 percent.

In London, the FTSE 100 index gained 46.40 or 0.83 percent to 5,667.20.
