LAGOS, Nigeria, June 21 (UPI) -- Militants in Nigeria have blown up an oil pipeline near the Escravos oilfields, military officials said.

Chevron, the U.S. corporation that owns the pipeline, said the attack prompted it to shut down onshore oil production, BBC reported Saturday.

The loss in production equates to about 120,000 barrels per day, or about 6.6 percent of Nigeria's total daily crude production, the British network reported.

On Friday, the Nigerian government announced it would spend a $10 billion windfall from the rising price of oil on a mix of federal and state improvements, including $5 billion to fix the country's power supply.

The remaining $5 billion will be shared among Nigeria's 36 state governments.
