Truckers blockade Spain on fuel concerns

MADRID, June 9 (UPI) -- Spanish truck drivers slowed to a crawl Monday near the French border to protest rising fuel costs.

French farmers joined the protest in sympathy, blocking roads with tractors, a show of force that foreshadows a national strike planned for next Monday, The New York Times reported.

The blockade and traffic-stalling actions throughout Spain have drawn an angry response, the report said.

As diesel fuel prices have surged to around $8 per gallon in Spain, thousands of truck drivers have gone into action, provoking clashes that have led to broken windshields and slashed truck tires, the Times said.

The action is one of series of gas-price actions in Europe, where truckers, farmers and fishermen have staged protests recently.
