Tribune Co. may cut more staff and content

CHICAGO, June 5 (UPI) -- The owner of the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and nine other daily newspapers may trim content and possibly staff, the company's chief executive said.

"You find out you can eliminate a fair number of people while eliminating not very much content," Tribune Co. Chief Executive Officer Randy Michaels said Thursday.

Tribune Co. cut 400 editorial jobs in March, Crain's Business Journal reported. However, Michaels revealed an in-house study that showed writers at the Los Angeles Times were averaging 51 pages of content a year, while writers at the Hartford Courant and the Baltimore Sun were producing 300 pages of content a year, Crain's reported.

Michaels said the company could reduce content by 500 editorial pages a week and end up with a per-page ratio of 50-50, editorial content to advertisements.

"We can save a lot of money by producing the right-sized newspaper," Michaels said.
