American Airlines to stop Oakland service

OAKLAND, Calif., May 6 (UPI) -- American Airlines, citing high fuel costs, announced Tuesday it would stop serving the Oakland, Calif., airport.

The airline has served the Oakland International Airport for six decades, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Tuesday.

The airline said it will cease its Oakland service Sept. 3.

Ferrying 216,000 passengers between Oakland and Dallas-Fort Worth annually, the carrier's service amounts to 1.5 percent of the airport's annual passenger load, the report said.

"They said they are making changes system-wide because of the high cost of fuel," Port of Oakland spokeswoman Marilyn Sandifur told the Chronicle.
