U.S. markets recover from steep losses

DETROIT, April 25 (UPI) -- General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers avoided strikes that had been threatened at plants in Kansas and Michigan, union officials said.
A strike scheduled to begin Friday at GM plants in Wyoming, Mich., was averted "even though a settlement has not been made," the union said on its Web site.
"As long as talks continue and progress is made workers will continue to work," the statement said.
Union officials said they also avoided a strike set for a Chevrolet Malibu plant in Kansas City, where 1,700 union workers are employed.
GM spokesman Dan Flores said negotiations are also continuing with union officials in Mansfield, Ohio, where a strike deadline is set for Monday. the Detroit Free Press reported. .
