U.S. markets recover from steep losses
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., April 8 (UPI) -- A Florida court has ordered a collection agency to pay $1.3 million in restitution Monday for harassing and overcharging debtors.
More than 380 plaintiffs in the case had filed complaints against Ellis Crosby and Associates, WJXT-TV in Jacksonville, Fla., reported.
Duval County Circuit Judge L. Haldane Taylor ordered the company to pay $700,000 in fines for violating state and federal collection laws. The company also must pay $388,000 in restitution and $253,000 in legal fees. He also barred company owner Ted Ellis Crosby and his company from working in debt collection in the state.
Attorney General Bill McCollum said, "Florida will not tolerate unscrupulous individuals who victimize our citizens in potentially difficult financial situations."
