BAGHDAD, March 24 (UPI) -- A small group of brokerage traders in Iraq were cheered this week by exchanging white boards for a new electronic trading system.

The previous stock exchange in Baghdad involved the use of white boards in a room of a large villa in city's financial district.

The room is walled with iron bars to protect brokers from their clientele, The Telegraph (Britain) reported.

The new system was seen as a step towards recovery in the country after five years of continuous war.

"We have planned this for many years but faced many ups and downs," said Baghdad stock exchange Chief Executive Taha Salam.

"Iraq is a place where we have been hidden away from the world for far too long, but finally we are seeing some progress," he said.
