CHICAGO, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Sara Lee Corp. Chief Executive Officer Brenda Barnes said the U.S. company was in the position to acquire other businesses.
Barnes recently told investors at a conference, "We now have the capability to think about acquisitions," Crain's Business Journal reported.
The company, which has consolidated its interests since Barnes took over in 2005, would be interested in businesses that would help it expand its product line into new markets or producers who could help it gain market share in niches it already occupied, the report said.
The company has sold 40 percent of its holding since 2005. Industry analyst said Sara Lee, which makes breads, meat and household goods, would be interested in purchasing a U.S. brand of bread, the report said.
