In its annual report, Statistics Canada reviewed highways and roads, bridges and overpasses, water supply systems, wastewater treatment facilities and sanitary and storm sewer systems across the country.
It said In 2007, the average age of the country's public infrastructure was 16.3 years, down from its peak of 17.5 years in 2000. The gross value of all infrastructure amounted to $286.2 billion in 2007, 5.3 percent more than in 2001, the study found.
In Quebec, all five infrastructures were older than the national average in 2007, although investment in highways and roads has been strong since 2001.
Ontario had the youngest overall public infrastructure system in the country in 2007, while Nova Scotia had the oldest, the study said.
