Verizon overcharged NYC customers

NEW YORK, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- The New York Public Service Commission says Verizon has overcharged New York City customers $14.3 million since 2003.

The state agency found the mistakes while examining bills from 30 New York phone companies to determine if the telecoms were labeling taxes and surcharges correctly, The New York Post reported Sunday.

After a 2006 advisory, Verizon conducted its own review and found the overcharges to its customers who had long-distance service through its Freedom plans.

Customers were reportedly overcharged for a surcharge collected for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority projects, the New York gross revenue tax and the municipal surcharge, The Post reported.

Verizon's overcharges have resulted in an average refund of $10 with interest, the newspaper said. Credits were issued to customers this month.
