Wall Street rebounds, but still down

NEW YORK, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Wall Street rebounded from early steep losses but still finished down Tuesday as investors managed recession fears amid indications of a bear market.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed at 11,971.19, down 1.1 percent, or 128 points, after an intra-day drop of more than 464 points.

The Standard & Poor's 500 was off the same 1.1 percent, down 14.69 points, at 1,310.50.

The Nasdaq composite index, flirting with bear market conditions, fell 2 percent, or 47.75 points, to 2,292.27.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,410 stocks rose, while 1,783 declined on a listed volume of 6.45 billion shares.

Ten-year U.S. Treasury bonds climbed 1-12/32 for a yield of 3.475 percent.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 Index fell harder, closing down 5.7 percent, at 12,573.05 -- bringing losses since Friday's close to nearly 10 percent.

The dollar was mixed, with the euro trading at $1.4623, compared to $1.444 late Monday. The dollar traded at 106.62 yen, up from 105.99 yen late Monday.

In London, the FTSE 100 rebounded 161.90 points to 5,740.10, a gain of 2.9 percent.
