
EDINBURGH, Scotland, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Scottish retailers are finding that their customers are being even more frugal than usual this Christmas.
Analysts are unsure how much of the drop in sales is from a stagnant economy and loss of consumer confidence and how much from growing on-line sales, The Scotsman reported. But the number of customers entering stores was down 5.9 percent last Tuesday and 8.7 percent on Wednesday from the numbers on the equivalent days in 2006.
Some retailers hope that the numbers come from another source -- more people leaving their Christmas shopping to the last minute. The Glasgow Fort shopping center plans to stay open for 31 hours straight to give shoppers a chance to play catch-up.
Stores are also doing some aggressive price-cutting.
