U.S. markets recover from steep losses

ANTOFAGASTA, Chile, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- The world's largest copper mine was back in operation in northern Chile Monday after a weekend earthquake caused rock slides and cut power to the site.
Majority owner BHP Billiton said the 6.7-magnitude quake interrupted operations at Escondida for several hours Sunday, Resource Investor reported Monday. Chile's mines also had been hit by a quake last month.
There was no apparent damage to the Escondida mine site itself.
