CHICAGO, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Ex-Conrad Black deputy David Radler was sentenced in Chicago Monday to 29 months in prison for stealing millions from Hollinger International Inc. shareholders.
Radler, 65, a former Chicago Sun-Times publisher, also was fined $250,000 in federal court as part of his plea deal.
Radler admitted to looting $32 million and has paid more than $61 million in restitution. He pleaded guilty to mail fraud in 2005 and testified against Black, his onetime Hollinger newspaper empire business partner, in return for a lenient sentence.
Black was sentenced last week to 6 1/2 years in prison for cheating Hollinger shareholders.
"I made mistakes and they hurt me and my family and others," Radler told U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve during his sentencing hearing.
St. Eve ordered Radler to begin serving his sentence Feb. 25 and said she would recommend the Moshannon Valley Correctional Facility in Philipsburg, Pa.
He could have received a sentence of 57 to 71 months.
Prosecutors have agreed not to oppose Radler if he seeks transfer to a prison in his home country of Canada, where he could serve a significantly smaller portion of his sentence because of Canadian prison rules, the Sun-Times reported.
