Retailers report mixed November sales

NEW YORK, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- U.S. retailers report mixed results in November with generally lower-than-expected sales after two months of weak results.

Those missing their estimates blamed economic concerns while cold weather helped other retailers, the Wall Street Journal said Thursday.

Department stores fared best, notably Macy's, which had a 13 percent sales surge. Target, on the other hand, said it would need increased December sales or it will miss its quarterly profit prediction.

Wal-Mart reported a 1.5 percent rise in U.S. same-store sales, with groceries and pharmacy sales again leading the way. "Black Friday" sales the day after Thanksgiving were called "very solid."

Costco reported a stronger-than-expected 9 percent rise in November same-store sales. The warehouse club recorded a 6 percent sales increase domestically, two percentage points of which was attributed to higher gasoline prices.
