WASHINGTON, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Amtrak honored the executive director of the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority for her support and commitment to U.S. passenger rail service.

During a ceremony in Washington, Amtrak President and CEO Alex Kummant presented Patricia Quinn with Amtrak’s most prestigious award, the President’s Service and Safety Award for a state partner. She is one of three people who received the award nationally, Amtrak said in a news release Monday.

"Your efforts exemplify initiative, commitment and dedication to Amtrak, and our entire organization extends to you our highest appreciation," Kummant said.

As executive director of the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, Quinn directed the success of the Downeaster service, which experienced steady growth in ridership and revenue under her leadership. In fiscal year 2007, Downeaster ridership reached 361,634 passengers, a 7 percent increase over last year, Amtrak said.
