Report: Chrysler to cut 1,000 more jobs

DETROIT, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Chrysler LLC plans to cut at least 1,000 salaried workers to match the U.S. automaker's shrinking domestic market share, a published report said Wednesday.

Chrysler's board approved the job cuts Tuesday, along with unspecified manufacturing layoffs, hundreds of contract-employee cuts and possible factory shift reductions, The Detroit News reported.

The automaker will also drop four vehicles -- the Dodge Magnum wagon, Chrysler Pacifica crossover, PT Cruiser hatchback and Chrysler Crossfire roadster -- from its product lineup, the newspaper said.

The cuts, to be announced as early as Wednesday, are part of an operational revamping of the newly independent automaker under the ownership of private-equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP.

The job cuts are in addition to the elimination of 11,000 hourly positions and 2,000 salaried jobs -- primarily through buyouts -- included in Chrysler's "recovery and transformation" plan announced before Chrysler was sold by DaimlerChrysler AG Aug. 3.

A Chrysler spokesman declined to confirm the job cuts or product changes.
