Nissan unveils new GT-R supercar

TOKYO, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Nissan Motor Co. entered the ranks of supercar manufacturers when the Japanese automaker rolled out the latest version of its Skyline muscle cars.

The new GT-R, unveiled Wednesday in Tokyo, features some of the automaker's best technology -- including a four-wheel-drive system designed to ensure sharp handling and cornering, and a twin-turbo V-6 engine delivering 480 horsepower, The Detroit Free Press reported.

For the heavy-of-foot, the car accelerates from zero to 60 mph in less than four seconds.

"The new Nissan GT-R is an extraordinary car, a technological flagship for Nissan that demonstrates our passion for cars," said Carlos Tavares, Nissan executive vice president for corporate and product planning.

While following standards set by Porsche and other top sports car makers when designing its supercar, Nissan designed and priced the GT-R to appeal to a range of driving enthusiasts. In Japan, the GT-R will cost $68,000 when it goes on sale in December. The car will reach U.S. showrooms in June, with a price range between $70,000 and $80,000.

Nissan's iconic Skyline GT-R muscle cars' dominance on the racing track earned them the nickname "Godzilla."
