Google seeks global Internet privacy laws

STRASBOURG, France, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Google has urged governments and private businesses to adopt a basic set of global Internet privacy rules.

Without such standards, the health of the Internet is at risk, Peter Fleischer, the search site’s privacy chief told a U.N. conference in Strasbourg, France.

He said that the rise of the Internet meant vast amounts of personal data was regularly shipped around the globe, often through countries with little or no data protection laws.

Europe has strict privacy regulations but some are likely outdated, he said. The United States, by contrast, has no nationwide privacy laws.
