BUDAPEST, Hungary, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- British retail giant Tesco Saturday opened the first of five convenience stores planned for Hungary.

The shop in Szeged launches the planned Tesco Express chain of smaller C-stores to be opened in the coming month in Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Tesco already has a strong presence in Hungary that includes 72 supermarkets and 42 gasoline stations, but concluded the Balkans market was saturated in terms of larger outlets and decided future expansion would focus on smaller stores.

According to Hungary’s MTI, Tesco Express will open five more stores in Hungary by the end of the year.
