TEL AVIV, Israel, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- A planning committee has approved a proposal to build a new Tel Aviv airport on a man-made island offshore, The Jerusalem Post reported.
The National Planning Committee’s action Tuesday moves the project forward significantly. It is the first time the committee has ruled that creating several artificial islands is feasible -- a decade after the plan was first proposed.
The airport, replacing Sde Dov Airport in Ramat Aviv, would be on the largest of the chain of islands. The islands would be about 1,200 feet offshore.
"We are a growing economy. We are a small state. We need more power plants, more storage facilities for fuel, more harbor and airport facilities -- things that usually take up a lot of space," said Shamay Assif, head of building and planning in the interior ministry.
