U.S. stocks slip on credit fears

NEW YORK, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- U.S. stock indexes closed down Monday as credit-market fears ate up earlier gains inspired by central banks’ pumping more cash into money markets

The Dow Jones industrial average edged down 3.01 points, or 0.02 percent, to close at 13,236,53. It was up more than 80 points in earlier trading.

The broader Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained shed 0.72 points, or 0.5 percent, at 1,452.92.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,637 stocks rose and 1,703 declined, on volume of 3.7 billion shares traded.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index lost 2.65 points, or 0.1 percent, at 2,542.24.

In London, the FTSE 100 index closed up 180.70, or 2.99 percent, at 6,219.00.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index finished the day up 35.96 points, or 0.21 percent, at 16,800.05.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note rose 9/32, yielding 4.776 percent, while the 30-year bond was up 17/32, yielding 5.01 percent.

The U.S. dollar fell to 118.19 yen from 118.53 yen in New York late Friday. The euro rose to $1.3607 from $1.3696.
