DETROIT, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- General Motors says it plans to develop lithium-ion battery cells with A123Systems to power GM hybrid electric drive vehicles.

Vice Chairman Bob Lutz told the Detroit Free Press GM hopes to have the hybrid Chevrolet Volt on the market by late 2010 and the first full lithium-ion battery pack ready for testing by the end of this year.

Toyota announced earlier on Thursday that it was delaying its next-generation hybrids, which also call for lithium-ion batteries, because of safety concerns.
