COLOGNE, Germany, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- German airline Lufthansa is considering adding triple-decker bunks in an economy sleeper cabin for the cost-conscious traveler on long-haul flights.
The first-ever offering of economy-class sleeper bunks likely would be on the Airbus A380, giving budget fliers the chance of a horizontal nap previously reserved for business- and first-class fliers, The Daily Mail reported Tuesday.
Details of the idea emerged as Lufthansa praised feedback it received from customers via an online poll.
Lufthansa spokeswoman Amelie Lorenz said airline officials would analyze survey results, "then we will decide whether to proceed or not. But the first results have been very positive."
Lufthansa revealed computer-generated pictures of its triple-decker bed concept as part of a customer survey to see whether the idea would fly, the British newspaper said. The beds would be stacked three-high in herringbone rows along the sides of the plane.
If the idea is adopted, the airline would have to fine-tune how the beds would be adjusted so passengers could eat and how the cabin would be configured for take off and landing.
The bunk beds would have to be approved by international safety authorities.
