WASHINGTON, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Dry conditions in California to the northern Rockies stressed crops, kept irrigation demands high and fed into wildfire threats, government statistics showed.
However, slightly cooler air moved over areas west of the Rockies, accompanied by some much needed rain in the Four Corner States, weekly weather statistics from the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
Moving east, showers dotted the Plains States as far north as South Dakota, while little rain fell in Montana and North Dakota. Small-grain harvesting advanced in northern Plains areas, except in South Dakota's wettest spots.
Patchy showers benefited Midwestern corn and soybeans, but other parts of the Corn Belt remained in need of rain to stabilize crop conditions.
Hot weather spread across the eastern third of the United States, increasing stress on immature summer crops in some of the drier areas.
Drier conditions returned to water-saturated sections of central and southern Texas.
