Council OK's 1,000-unit Hollywood complex

LOS ANGELES, July 18 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles City Council has approved a 1,000-unit apartment complex in Hollywood, the latest project in a revival of the once-seedy district.

The $400 million Blvd6200, on Hollywood Boulevard near the famous Vine Street intersection, will be the largest residential project among more than 2,500 upscale condominium and apartment units in the historical center of movie studios and stars, the Los Angeles Times reported.

It also will include shops and restaurants at street level and house 2,696 parking spaces underground or concealed behind the street-level stores.

Developer Veronica Hackett, who helped revitalize New York's Times Square in the 1980s, said the project would create a "pedestrian-friendly" neighborhood.

"One of these days, people are going to walk in Hollywood," she said.

Blvd6200 will be built around the historic Pantages Theater, home for Los Angeles's permanent production of the Tony Award-winning musical "Wicked." The theater hosted the Academy Awards in the 1950s and is mentioned in the 1979 song "Chuck E's in Love" by Rickie Lee Jones.

At 140 units per acre, Blvd6200 will be one of the densest projects in Los Angeles.

It will take about two years to complete, Hackett said.
