WASHINGTON, July 16 (UPI) -- Six U.S. airlines applied Monday to fly new direct routes between the United States and China, the airlines said.
AMR Corp.'s American Airlines, UAL Corp.'s United Airlines, Delta Air Lines Inc., Northwest Airlines Corp. and Continental Airlines Inc. -- which already operate direct flights between the U.S. and China -- were joined by US Airways Group Inc., which applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation for its first direct flight to China, the airlines said.
As early as next month the department will choose one daily round-trip route to begin this year, another to begin next year and four to begin in 2009, it said.
At an unannounced later date, the department will award three more new routes to begin in 2010 and two more to begin in 2011, it said.
The department expects the new routes to generate as much as $5 billion in revenue for the airline industry in the next six years, it said.
