POTSDAM, Germany, June 22 (UPI) -- The two leading members of the U.S. team at the G4 trade talks in Germany Friday sharply criticized India and Brazil for blocking the session.
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johannes and Trade Representative Susan Schwab assailed what was called a refusal to negotiate by the two nations during Doha Round talks on potential trade opportunities for developing countries.
"I believe very strongly that Brazil and India came to this Potsdam meeting with an idea that this was not going to come together," Johannes said.
Earlier, in an interview in the Financial Times, Schwab said the two nations' fear of growing Chinese imports was behind their decision to act as they did.
She said India had convinced Brazil to stick to a strategy that went directly against its own economic interests.
Both said the campaign isn't over and will continue when the time is right.
