U.S. stocks finish week strong

NEW YORK, June 15 (UPI) -- U.S. stocks started strong and kept building Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, as two indexes moved close to record highs.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 85.76 points, 0.63 percent, finishing the day at 13,639.48. The Standard & Poor's 500 gained 9.94 points, or 0.65 percent, to reach 1,532.91. The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 27.30 points, or 1.05 percent, to close at 2,622.71.

The Dow Jones industrial average climbed more than 340 points during the past three trading sessions. Friday's trading brought both that index and the Standard & Poor's 500 to within sight of their record highs, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Stocks generally advanced on the NYSE Friday, as 2,629 stocks gained and 678 declined, on volume 3.478 billion shares traded on the exchange.

Bonds finished higher. The 10-year note gained $5.625 for every $1,000 invested, yielding 5.148 percent.

The dollar ended the week mixed. The dollar against the euro was at $1.3379 Friday from $1.3310 late Thursday and was at 123.45 yen Thursday, compared with 122.94 a day earlier.

The FTSE 100 index in Britain advanced 0.6 percent at 6,686.20.

The Nikkei 225 Average finished the day 0.7 percent higher at 17,971.
