U.S. gasoline prices reach record highs

CAMARILLO, Calif., May 21 (UPI) -- U.S. gasoline prices reached record highs of nearly $3.20 for a gallon of unleaded Monday, eclipsing the 1981 record, a gasoline-price tracking service said.

AAA said Monday the average U.S. retail regular unleaded gasoline price was $3.196 a gallon, up 1.8 cents from Sunday's $3.178 a gallon.

Lundberg Survey Inc. said current price tops the 1981 record of $1.35 a gallon, which works out to $3.15 in current dollars.

The AAA survey showed prices rose 4 percent in the past week and 11.8 percent over the past month.

AAA told Congress last week it expected prices to approach $3.25 a gallon over the next 60 days.

California had the highest average price Monday, with a gallon of regular unleaded costing $3.457, up slightly from $3.453 Sunday.

Only three states -- New Hampshire, New Jersey and South Carolina -- have an average gas price below $3, CNN reported. And they were a penny or less of that mark.
