P&G ads say its pet food is safe

CINCINNATI, April 4 (UPI) -- Procter & Gamble Co. took out full-page ads Wednesday assuring North American pet owners its Iams and Eukanuba pet-food products now on store shelves are safe.

"We know many people are confused and uncertain about which products are safe. We want to assure our customers that they can feel completely safe feeding any of the Iams and Eukanuba products now on store shelves, both wet and dry," says a letter in the ads, appearing in 59 North American daily newspapers.

The letter says none of the brands' dry food was affected by the recall.

The campaign, which a P&G spokesman told Advertising Age was a "first step," comes as the nationwide recall has been extended to three more manufacturers beyond the original 95 brands recalled by Canada's Menu Foods.

Colgate-Palmolive Co. recalled some of its Hill's Prescription Diet dry cat food and Nestle Purina recalled Alpo wet dog food with the affected wheat gluten.

In addition, Del Monte Foods recalled Jerky Treats and Gravy Train treats for dogs and some Pounce treats for cats.

P&G's ad does not apologize, but describes employees as "heartsick that any of our Iams and Eukanuba products were involved."
