Disneyland sues to halt housing plan

ANAHEIM, Calif., Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Disneyland has filed suit against Anaheim, Calif., to stop what the resort company says is inappropriate housing development in the tourist area.

The lawsuit to stop the building of affordable housing demands Anaheim, home of the Disneyland theme park and resort complex, require the developers go through full environmental studies, The Orange County Register of Santa Ana, Calif., reports.

While affordable housing advocates praised the plan as a way to build low-cost homes near resort jobs, Disney and other business leaders said the proposal went against the long-term vision to put hotels and tourist venues on the 26.7-acre plot.

"Our concern is, this could quickly unravel the Anaheim Resort area and the golden egg that it is for Anaheim," Disneyland spokesman Rob Doughty says.

A consultant for developer SunCal Cos., which wants to include 225 affordable units in a 1,500-home development, calls the lawsuit "another intimidation action on Disney's part."
