Carl Icahn seeks Motorola board seat

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Jan. 30 (UPI) -- New York billionaire financier Carl Ichan is seeking nomination to Motorola Inc.'s board of directors, the Illinois-based cell phone maker said Tuesday.

Motorola said it received a notice that Icahn "may be deemed to beneficially own, in the aggregate, 33,529,000 shares," or 1.39 percent, of the company. Motorola said the notice contained no information about Icahn's intentions in seeking a board seat.

The Schaumburg, Ill., electronics maker said it was reviewing the notice. The company has not yet set a date for its 2007 annual shareholders meeting.

Icahn earned a reputation as a corporate raider after his hostile takeover of Trans World Airlines in 1985.

Last year, he took over the chairmanship of Imclone Systems Inc. and has had been an "activist" investor in Time Warner Inc., owning 3.3 percent of the company.

This month he purchased a 9.2 percent stake in cancer-research biopharmaceutical company Telik Inc. of Palo Alto, Calif.
