Intel set to introduce revolutionary chip

NEW YORK, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- U.S. computer chip maker Intel says it will take microchips into a new generation with technology allowing faster and more energy-efficient processor.

Researchers at Intel said the technological advance is the most significant change in silicon chip materials since the company created the modern integrated-circuit transistor more than 40 years ago, the New York Times reported Saturday.

The new microprocessor chips, which should go into production during the second half of 2007, are designed for computers, but could be used in other elctronic devices that use procesors, like cell phones. The combination of processing power and energy efficiency in the chip could make it possible play longer videos with less battery drain on a cellular device.

Intel said one of its biggest accomplishments with the new chip has been overcoming the obstacle that arises as a transistor's switches are made smaller, which is that they tend to leak electrical current as insulating material is taken away.

Intel is using new metallic alloys in the insulation and other components to beat the problem.
