Crisco shortening goes zero trans fat

ORRVILLE, Ohio, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The entire line of Crisco shortening products has been reformulated to have zero trans fats, and distribution of the new line began Thursday.

The J. M. Smucker Company of Orrville, Ohio, said in a statement after extensive consumer testing, the reformulated shortening not only tastes, performs and measures just as it always has but it now contains zero grams trans fat per serving while maintaining 50 percent less saturated fat than butter.

All-Vegetable and Butter Flavor Crisco shortening products were also reformulated, and the company said Crisco oils and sprays have always contained zero trans fat.

In 1911, Crisco was the first commercial product to employ partial hydrogenation of plant oils that create trans fat, which has been linked to coronary heart disease.
