Nokia introduces thin RAZR-like flip phone

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Nokia Corp. introduced a thin, folding cell phone in Las Vegas Monday as a design improvement to compete against Motorola Inc.'s slim flip phones.

The high-end Nokia model N76 is a half-inch thick, has a two-megapixel camera and will compete against Motorola's RAZR V3x, a folding phone with similar capabilities that is a little more than 3/4-inch thick, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Nokia also showcased upgrades to its hand-held Internet browsing device called the Internet Tablet. The device relies on short-range wireless technology rather than cell phone networks. While it is not a cell phone, it can make and receive voice calls through the Internet.

As part of the upgrade, the Internet Tablet will be sold loaded with Skype Web-phone software so users can make inexpensive or free calls over the Internet if they are in a wireless Internet zone.

Nokia of Espoo, Finland, the world's largest cell phone maker, is trying to regain ground against Motorola and Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea, which also embraced consumer interest in thin flip phones.
