U.S. markets recover from steep losses

ATLANTA, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- EarthLink Inc. chief executive Garry Betty has died from cancer complications at age 49, the Internet service provider said in Atlanta Wednesday.
Mike Lunsford will remain interim CEO, a position he has held since Betty took a leave of absence Nov. 27.
Betty joined EarthLink in 1996 and oversaw the company's growth from a regional ISP with 500,000 subscribers to a national service provider with more than 5 million.
Before joining EarthLink, Betty served as CEO of Digital Communications Associates Inc. -- and was at the time the youngest CEO of a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
Betty's memorial arrangements are pending. EarthLink released no information about his survivors.
