TORONTO, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Wal-Mart was among the top 50 best employers in Canada, a nationwide survey showed.

The world's largest retailer, ranked 34th, joined software company Intuit (11), financial-services brokerage Edward Jones (3) and pharmaceutical healthcare company GlaxoSmithKline (10) in the survey appearing Friday in Canada's Report on Business magazine.

The No. 1 employer identified in the survey was financial-services company Wellington West Capital Inc. of Winnipeg, Manitoba, employing close to 500 people.

Procter & Gamble was ranked 16. Marriott was ranked 21 and Xerox was ranked 38.

The survey, conducted by the magazine and the Hewitt Associates human resources firm, canvassed more than 100,000 employees, 2,000 business leaders and 100 human resources professionals, the magazine said.

The overall measure used to rank the best employers was employee engagement, study leader Neil Crawford of Hewitt Associates said.

"Engaged employees are emotionally committed to their employers," he said.
