Sony's lithium ion battery woes continue

TOKYO, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- More computer makers are recalling lithium ion batteries made by Japan's Sony Corp. for use in notebook and laptop PCs.

Toshiba Corp. said Friday it will recall about 830,000 lithium-ion batteries made by Sony. That follows last week's offer to exchange 340,000 notebook batteries because it said they could unexpectedly cut power, causing users to lose unsaved work.

Dell Inc. also said Friday it was increasing the number of recalled batteries from 4.1 million units to approximately 4.2 million units.

Meanwhile, Sony said in a statement it "will initiate a global replacement program for certain battery packs that utilize Sony-manufactured lithium ion cells used by notebook computer manufacturers in order to address concern related to recent over-heating incidents."

Earlier this week Lenovo said it would replace batteries for 526,000 of its laptops sold in 2005 and 2006.
