U.S. markets recover from steep losses

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Sept. 1 (UPI) -- U.S. consumer sentiment declined in August, but improved late in the month as gasoline prices retreated, a university survey said Friday.
Consumer sentiment for the latter half of August was 82.0, up from 78.7 early August, the University of Michigan said.
Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had expected an increase to about 79.3 in late August, so consumer sentiment was higher than they expected.
The survey's index of current conditions edged up to 103.8 from 103.5 in July and 100.8 in early August.
Consumer expectations rose to 68.0 from 64.5 in early August, but slipped from 72.5 in July.
