SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- AT&T Inc., the largest U.S. telecommunications company, plans to build a WiFi network for Springfield, Ill.
The company, which operates more than 34,000 small-scale WiFi "hotspots" in more than 80 countries, will use a combination of wireless networking technologies to cover the 50-square-mile Springfield area, the Financial Times reported Wednesday.

"We see this as a growth opportunity," said Eric Shepcaro, AT&T's senior vice-president of business development, adding that he sees WiFi as a complement to the company' existing business in Springfield.
No taxpayer dollars will be used to establish the WiFi network.
