U.S. markets recover from steep losses

WASHINGTON, July 27 (UPI) -- U.S. commercial airfares rose a record 10.3 percent in the first quarter, the result of soaring jet fuel prices and rising traveler demand.
And bankrupt Delta Air Lines just hiked most domestic fares by $5 one way, bringing the highest coach seat price in its simplified fare structure to $504, and $704 for first class, USA Today reported Thursday. US Airways, United, Northwest, Continental and American airlines were evaluating Delta's action late Wednesday and -- although they have yet to follow -- are expected to do likewise.
In the last 19 months there are have 18 industry-wide rounds of price hikes, not counting Southwest Airlines, said JPMorgan airline analyst Jamie Baker.
