ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, July 17 (UPI) -- Leaders from five developing countries and the World Trade Organization joined Group of Eight leaders in Russia to advance talks on liberalizing trade.
Leaders from Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa, as well as Pascal Lamy, the head of the WTO took part in Monday's working meeting on the final day of the G8 summit.
The G8 has urged the WTO to continue within one month the stalling Doha round talks to break the impasse created after the European Union, the United States and the G20 group of poorer countries failed to agree to cut tariffs and stop trade-distorting subsidies, mainly on agriculture.
Other international organizations also joined Monday's meeting: Leaders included U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency Mohamed ElBaradei, and leaders of UNESCO, the World Bank, the International Energy Agency and the World Health Organization.
