MADRID, July 10 (UPI) -- Spanish airline Iberia has canceled more than 200 flights on the first day of a 7-day pilot strike, El Pais newspaper reported Monday.

Pilots are upset with Iberia's plans to launch a budget airliner, which they contend could cost them their jobs in the future.

Officials for the Spanish airline met with pilot representatives Sunday in an effort to assure them their jobs were not in jeopardy. Those talks failed however and the Iberia pilots kicked off their weeklong strike at midnight Monday.
