U.S. markets recover from steep losses

SMITHFIELD, Va., June 27 (UPI) -- Smithfield Foods Inc. is paying $575 million to buy the European meats business of Sara Lee Corp.
Oaktree Capital Management LLC. will be SFI's 50-50 partner in the deal, which also includes debt assumption, SFI said Tuesday.
SFI also said it will contribute its Jean Caby operations to the joint venture with Oaktree. Group Jean Caby had sales of $372 million in fiscal 2006 and is a major producer of branded and private label processed meats to retail and food-service customers in France and other European countries.
