Goldman Sachs picks new CEO

NEW YORK, June 2 (UPI) -- Goldman Sachs Group Inc. has named its president and chief operating officer, Lloyd C. Blankfein, as its next chairman and chief executive.

The appointment will take place as soon as current chief executive and chairman, Henry M. Paulson Jr., is confirmed by the U.S. Senate as secretary of the treasury, the company said Friday.

Blankfein has been a board member since April 2003 and was appointed president in late 2003.
