Delphi union seeks strike authorization

TROY, Mich., May 4 (UPI) -- The United Auto Workers asked its members to authorize a strike against Delphi Corp., a big Michigan auto parts supplier.

The request raises the prospects of a strike at the bankrupt auto-parts supplier that could well force its main customer, General Motors Corp. to halt production, The Wall Street Journal said Thursday. If such a production stoppage were more than a few days, GM would be expected to file for creditor protection.

The UAW action comes a week before Delphi plans to seek court approval to cancel its contract with the union. UAW Vice President Richard Shoemaker told local union leaders Wednesday to seek a vote by May 14 that would give senior union officials authority to call a strike.

Shoemaker has in the past said that a strike is likely if Delphi gets court approval to reject its labor contracts.
