Study: Red wine may be good for gums

QUEBEC CITY, March 11 (UPI) -- A new study shows chemicals in red wine may prevent or fight gum disease.

Scientists at Quebec's Universite Laval presented their findings to the American Association for Dental Research, despite some dentists' concerns.

The study shows polyphenols in the wine stem a certain molecule production that, when overexposed to the gums, can destroy tissue.

The BBC reports some experts say the wine treatment isn't as effective as simply brushing twice a day.

Leigh Greenwood of the British Dental Health Foundation said the acidic nature of the wine could conversely be bad for the teeth, possibly causing erosion.
