Latest dairy study examines men's weight

WASHINGTON, March 8 (UPI) -- Dairy products don't cause long-term weight gains in men, the National Dairy Council says of a 12-year observational study.

The examination of 19,000 healthy men between the ages 40-75 was drawn from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study and evaluated men's calcium intake and self-reported weight levels while following their usual diets.

"The good news for the public is that you can follow the (U.S. Department of Agriculture's) MyPyramid recommendation for three servings of dairy foods each day and get the nutrition benefits without concern of extra weight gain," said Greg Miller, executive vice president of the National Dairy Council.

"If you're cutting calories to lose weight, it's important to get your three servings of dairy foods each day for good health and to enhance your weight-loss efforts," Miller said.

The study, reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, also found that dairy-eating men tended to have lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
